4 Signs that Your Team is Measuring the Right Things…

There are many leaders I worked with that struggle with what to measure, and what measure to focus on. So, I put together 4 easy hints that your team is truly measuring the right thing in the right way.

  1. Your team and others talk about your metrics. They are not just addressing it during report releases or presentations but it’s a live part of regular processes and work. If you ever read “7 Habits of Highly Successful People” by Steven Covey, he discusses how important it is to maintain consistent transparency around the most important goals. So, the first sign or hint that you are measuring the right thing is that people are talking about it regularly and implementing it in their regular day-to-day work in a meaningful way.

  2. Team members are visualizing ways to move the needle and improve the performance against the metrics. That’s a sign that you’re using the right metrics. That they are usable and applicable.

  3. Your direct reports and others use the metrics in reports meetings, not just for your meetings, but in cascaded down meetings of your direct reports with their teams as well as in other meetings in other areas of the organization. This is a great sign that you’re using meaningful metrics for your organization.

  4. Your metrics make it obvious that the results can be influenced… Anyone can see the metrics and understand how performance can be changed or improved. The metrics are clear and obvious so whoever is not in your industry will understand.

So those are 4 very quick hints and signs that you are using the right metrics.

I hope these help you or someone you know. If you think it's going to help someone you know, feel free to share.
